Vogue Paris Features Model Of Color On Cover For First Time Since 2010

Ethiopian-born model, designer and philanthropist Liya Kebede has been tapped by Vogue Paris to cover its April 2015 issue. This marks the first time that a model of color has been featured alone on the publication's coveted cover since 2010, Fashion Gone Rogue pointed out.

Kebede was photographed by Inez & Vinoodh sporing a spring 2015 Christian Dior Haute Couture jumpsuit and curly hairstyle.

Fashionista reported that Kebede fronted Vogue Paris back in May 2002 and then Rose Cordero, a fellow model of color, was featured on its March 2010 cover.

Back in 2008, Noémie Lenoir appeared on the magazine's cover, but she was featured alongside white supermodel Laetitia Casta. That same year, Naomi Campbell also appeared on Vogue Paris' cover but with Kate Moss.

British model Jourdan Dunn debuted her Vogue U.K. February 2015 cover earlier this year, making her the first black model to cover the magazine solo since Campbell in 2002. Cara Delevingne got two covers in 2014 alone, as did Moss, who has covered the magazine at least once per year since her career began.

Dunn is known for being outspoken about racism in the fashion industry.

The Fashion Spot recently found that, in 2014, white models got almost five times more covers than nonwhite models.

The publication defined models of color as "those who appear to be nonwhite or of mixed backgrounds. Models included in the Latin category are classified as nonwhite Latins that do not appear to be strongly Afro-Latin."

The Fashion Spot analyzed 44 major print magazines and found that white models appeared on covers 567 times, while nonwhite models only made 119 appearances.

Other publications — aside from British Vogue and Vogue Paris — that failed to use any cover stars of color last year included Harper's Bazaar U.S. and U.K., Vogue U.K., Vogue Netherlands, Vogue Ukraine, Vogue Russia, Teen Vogue, Numéro, Love and Porter.
