IT'S NO question that when it comes to beauty pageants, Filipinos stand out. Such is the case of Jennifer Helen Weigel, who was recently crowned Classic Mrs. Asia International Metropolitan 2015 last month.

The Mrs. Asia International beauty pageant started in 2012 and is a platform where all Asian married women are eligible to participate and showcase their beauty, talents and success. This year, the pageant took place in Malaysia.

Looking back, it never occurred to Jennfer that she would ever join the pageant or any other pageant, let alone bring home the crown.

In fact, it was such a surreal moment that she still couldn’t believe it even when they kept calling her name. “I was just confused if it was my name or not, because I never expected it. They kept on calling me, ‘Jen! Jen! It’s you!’” she recalled, laughing. “I was just standing there and I was floating. I went in front of the crowd. I was waving and I forgot the crown so I had to go back and get it. It felt great because it’s hard work. I tried my best to bring home the crown and I’m very proud to bring it home to Cebu, where I live.”

Apart from that, she had already won two special awards that night, one of which is the Best in Traditional Costume Award, for her costume made by Philipp Tampus.

Being a shy person, Jennifer didn’t have any experience when it came to beauty pageants, as she had never joined one despite being approached on more than one occasion. So when she was asked to, she wanted to back out but eventually decided to accept the challenge. Shortly after came the four-day training sessions in preparation for the pageant which included how to smile as well as the “duck walk,” among others.

Naturally all that hard work, coupled with encouragement from her family and friends as well as her unyielding faith in God paid off and she considers joining the pageant an unforgettable experience. “The moral support is very important because they believe in you.

I told only very few people and all I asked from them was to pray for me that during the contest, I’d be guided by God.”

When asked what advice she can give to the women aspiring to join the beauty pageant, the 49-year old Cebuana beauty points out that they should be physically fit, catch up on current events and train hard, as she swears on these to be very effective and confident.

“A lot of them really want to be beauty queens but they’re shy because they’re already old. No, age is just a number. Beauty is all about the inner heart and the soul,” she said.
