Moschino's Rossella Jardini on her wardrobe evolution

"I have always adored clothes - I am crazy about them - and all of my strongest memories from early life are linked to the clothes I was wearing at the time. On Sundays when I was very small I would be dressed in a pale yellow crêpe dress with embroidery at the collar and matching ankle socks. I will never forget when a tailor visited the house when I was 11 and measured me for a tartan dress that had two pleats, sleeves, and a white-round collar: I wanted it to end at the knee but my mother insisted he take it to calf-length - I was very unhappy.

Then when I was 15 I was sent to a severe boarding school run by nuns, I think as a lesson to show me how tough life could be: as soon as I could get permission to leave two nuns escorted me to a store while I spent my emergency money on a pair of patent moccasins with biscuit-coloured borders and a gold trim.

Now, when I go out for my walk on a Saturday afternoon, I often stop into the Moschino store to give advice to customers. I can't help it: I feel the need to help. I want to spread elegance. A lot of women - particularly older women - do not feel very confident about mixing and matching their outfits.

My theory is that they allow themselves to be influenced by their husbands saying 'this doesn't look good on you'. But what do husbands know? Exactly! The only time my husband Pierot had the courage to raise an eyebrow and mention something I was wearing was when I got some very, very wide Margiela trousers.

Those trousers were fantastic - and I wore them. You have to feel strong as well as comfortable. Don't let yourself fade away. That's why we never make clothes that push in just one direction. The more you live the more you see, so after a while in life you have an aesthetic that becomes developed and diverse and varied - there's nothing wrong with trying to fit everything together. Women are transformable according to their own will.

This season marks the 30th anniversary of Moschino, so the show will be a special night with a special party - but the collection is another thing. It is a proper collection and this time we have made a series of paired looks - bad girls and good girls. But, of course, it is never that simple, which is the fun of it all."
