Bright colors
Treat them like darks: “Separate and wash brights as you would darks like blacks,” says Jerry Pozniak, owner of dry-cleaning services Jeeves New York. Both are deeply saturated hues and should be washed in cold water with specially formulated detergent to prevent fading or bleeding.
Dry-clean color-blocked garments: “The dye from bright fabric can run into the adjacent fabric during the cleaning process,” Pozniak says. Have color-blocked items professionally dry-cleaned.
Don't rub out a stain: “The brighter the dye on a piece, the more chance that rubbing will ruin the color,” Pozniak says. Instead, use a blotting motion or take it to your dry cleaner.
Denim
Wash it only when stained: “Denim doesn't hold dye very well, so the only way to keep the color of your jeans is to never wash them,” Pozniak says. Spot treat as necessary, and when you really feel it's time to give them a wash, use cold water and air dry.
Keep it soft: “Tumble-dry jeans in the dryer on the low or ‘air' setting for a few minutes to eliminate stiffness,” Pozniak says. This breaks up the fabric a bit and makes denim softer.
Store it without creasing: Fold jeans seam to seam and place them in a drawer or over a padded hanger. “The worst thing you can do is hang them with a wire hanger — it creates a potentially permanent line,” Pozniak says.
Silk
Steam it instead of cleaning: Because dry cleaning or washing can fade or slowly damage your silk, you never want to launder it just because it's wrinkled. “Use a steamer. Steam releases wrinkles more easily and less harshly than an iron,” Pozniak says.
Keep it snag-free: Always hang delicate pieces away from other garments and accessories, especially any with hooks, Velcro or sharp metal accents that can pull. “And be careful of the jewelry you wear with silk,” Pozniak says.
Avoid DIY-stain removal: Silk is temperamental, and the wrong stain-removal technique can ruin it. “Don't simply Google ‘How do I remove an oil stain?' ” Pozniak says. Bring it to a dry cleaner to avoid a bigger mess.
On the side
Side braids are the unofficial style of the overworked, overpartied and overslept, so in case you need to whip one up on your late commute, we'll keep things simple, says Allure magazine.
Part your hair: A middle part is unexpected and more likely to get you photographed by a street-style blogger, but side parts are better for those with lots of short layers or long faces (or just a more classic look).
If your hair is dirty, massage dry shampoo into the roots: Then blast everything from the ears down — dirty or clean — with a texturing spray to help the hair stick together and not fall out of your braid.
Gather the hair to one side: Take it behind one earlobe or lower and divide into three sections. Then braid to the ends.
